Estamos en medio de un apocalipsis silencioso, pero muy real. El espectro del suicidio se ha infiltrado en todos los rincones de nuestra sociedad, como un siniestro virus emocional que se propaga con un ímpetu aterrador. Lo más lamentable es que los guardianes designados de nuestra salud mental, ya sean nuestros seres queridos, instituciones académicas o médicas, parecen estar perdidos en la neblina, inseguros de cómo detectar las señales de advertencia de este monstruo mortal.
Centremos nuestra atención en la Región Centro, donde los suicidios están cimbrando los cimientos de la comunidad y de la Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila (UAdeC). Recientemente, un hombre de 53 años, Juan Ramón N. , acosado por problemas económicos, se sumó a la estadística de los 20 suicidios que se han registrado este año.
Jorge Salvador Guzmán Cortez, un sacerdote local, nos ofrece una reflexión que hiela la sangre: “cada vez que hay un caso de un suicidio hay al menos otros 8 casos más que no llegaron a lograrse”. Este comentario deja al descubierto el iceberg de la crisis suicida que estamos enfrentando.
La UAdeC ha sido un escenario trágico de esta alarmante tendencia. El rector, Salvador Hernández Vélez, ha sido forzado a compartir la noticia de suicidios entre sus estudiantes. En un solo día, dos jóvenes prometedoras, una de la Escuela de Ciencias de la Comunicación en Torreón y otra de la Escuela de Psicología en Saltillo, fueron arrebatadas por este mal.
Según Vanguardia, en 2022, Coahuila se encontraba asfixiada por más de 220 suicidios, convirtiéndose en la segunda causa de muerte fuera de las enfermedades físicas. Coahuila se ganó un deshonroso quinto lugar a nivel nacional en las tasas de suicidio. Un hecho que no puede ser ignorado.
Al observar el panorama nacional, vemos que los primeros lugares en tasas de suicidio son Chihuahua (15.1), Yucatán (14.5) y Aguascalientes (12.0). En contraste, Guerrero (1.3), Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave (3.1) y Baja California (3.2) presentan las tasas más bajas. Coahuila, con su tasa de 9.1, se cuela entre los nueve estados con las tasas más altas. Mientras, Durango se instala en el lugar 14 con una tasa de 7.5 por cada cien mil habitantes.
Además, no podemos pasar por alto el dato de que los grupos de edad más afectados por el suicidio son los de 15 a 24 y de 25 a 34 años, concentrando el 24.5% y el 27.4% de los suicidios, respectivamente. Un triste recordatorio de que estamos perdiendo a nuestros jóvenes en una guerra silenciosa.
Es necesario plantear la cuestión del contagio emocional. Un fenómeno psicológico que muestra cómo las emociones de una persona pueden influir en las emociones de otra. Es evidente que nuestra sociedad y nuestras instituciones están fallando en contener este fenómeno, a pesar de los llamados a la “conciencia” y “compasión”.
Estas instituciones están confundidas, mirando en direcciones equivocadas, sin comprender que lo que realmente necesitamos es enfrentar el problema de frente. Necesitamos dar a cada individuo las herramientas para lidiar con sus propias emociones y entender cómo éstas pueden impactar a otros. Debemos erradicar el estigma y abrir espacios seguros para hablar de estas cuestiones.
No podemos quedarnos de brazos cruzados mientras nuestros seres queridos son arrastrados por este mar de desesperación. Los datos y las cifras están ahí, apuntando a una crisis que no podemos seguir ignorando. Y si los abanderados de prevenir este tipo de situaciones no son capaces de detectar los riesgo ¿Quién sí?
